Sabina Thuraena is a magician indentured to the army of the Aenean Empire. Trained from a young age to channel magical energy with her mind, she can wield small amounts of magic under her own power. In order to channel and control large amounts of magic, however, she has to be psychically bound to a handler in a unit that the Aenean army calls a “dyad.” Sabina’s handler is named Decimus Thuraenus.
As an indentured magician, Sabina’s life must be controlled in every respect by her handler. Decimus is a decorated military commander in his own right and is proud of his powerful magician. Together as a unified dyad, they are a terrifying force and command great respect within the Aenean army.
However, Sabina is not to remain the property of the Aenean army forever. Decimus has big plans, and they involve using Sabina as an unwitting agent of treason against the Empire. While the Aenean army believes Decimus has been killed in battle and keeps Sabina imprisoned for questioning, Decimus will covertly gather his own forces and prepare them to stage a military coup. When all is prepared, Decimus will return to Sabina and command her to link her mind with his again, allowing her to draw on their combined power and kill the leadership of the Aenean army in one surprise attack. From there, Decimus will be free to take over the Empire by force.
But there is something that Decimus is not counting on: however he may view her, Sabina is a fellow human with her own thoughts, feelings and desires. Out from under his constant control for the first time while she is imprisoned, Sabina has the chance to figure out who she is, who she wants to be, and how to raise herself from the level of a barely-animate weapon to a person with agency. If Decimus is not careful, he may return to find that his magician has gained a personality, and a desire to live her own life - and she will not be so willing to return to how things used to be between them.
